Staedtische Tagesschule Zuerich
The school building emerges from the open area of the park by two one storey wings which are framing the courtyard and builds up towards the Aemtlerstreet in a crosswise oriented main body spacially defining the city park.
The spacial organization within the building allows at a high degree the functionalmix of school related functions with the public use of certain spaces. Spaces which are used by the public like cafeteria, library, workshop, music room are arranged around the courtyard and easily accessible forming the interface between the school programme with the requirements of the public for available spaces.
The classrooms are located in the second and third floor. Each classroom can be generously opened by large sliding doors towards outside classrooms, covered by the widely cantilevering concrete slabs offering the pupils and teachers flexible extension of the classes for differentiated groupwork or play.
These outside spaces form together with the balconies a escape route and allow a flexible furnishing of the group- and circulation spaces within the building.
The green roof terrace which is directly accessible from the classrooms in the second floor serves as a protected playground for the very young classes.
The crown of the school building is formed by the sports hall, which is used for school sports and as a place to play in spare time during the day. As it’s access is separated from the school functions, the sports hall can be reserved by the public at times where there are no classes and in the evenings.
Above the changing rooms there is a bistro and cafeteria. From this gallery and terrace one can enjoy the view on the sportsfield or in the canopies of the trees in the park.
The school building is a place which provides open and flexible spaces for the school children as well as the public. At daytime it is mingles with the dense surrounding trees while at night the crown is shining like a lantern in the dark canopies.
